RYAN GIGGS

Wales Senior international 1991 to 2006

During his 15 year international career Ryan Giggs gained 64 caps and scored 12 goals. He made 1 U21 appearance and a handful for the youth team, but was elevated to the Senior team at the age of 17 -at the time becoming the youngest senior international when he came on as substitute against Germany in 1991- and so when available for selection, was an automatic choice for the Senior side.

His first five appearances were as substitute, and with the exception of these early run outs and the away game against Italy in 1999, he always the number 11 shirt, the number he will always synonymously associated, particularly at his club Manchester United. Until Kappa took over supplying the Welsh kit, he had only be known to wear a short sleeve shirt on a couple of occasions, early in his international career. But during his time wearing Kappa international shirts he changed frequently between short and long sleeve shirts, and has even been known to wear a long sleeve in one half of a game -even getting the kit man to cut off his long sleeves on occasion- and short sleeve in the other half, an example being the 2006 World Cup Qualifier against England at Old Trafford in 2004.

Somebody who has actually admitted in a 2006 "Champions" magazine interview, that he has never kept a piece of memorabilia from his career. All his medals are loaned to the Manchester United Museum "so he'll appreciate them more when he has retired" but where have all his shirts gone?? I have a large number of his United match worn shirts in my collection -see ryangiggsmatchshirts.com coming during 2009- but his international shirts are much more difficult to find. I suppose as his stature grew in the game, his shirt as a post match swap with the opposition would have become much sought.

A holy grail of a shirt for me, i am always on the look out for any of Ryan's international jerseys. It would be great to expand this section in honour of, surely one of the greatest ever to don the red dragon of Wales.
