DANIEL GABBIDON

Away 3rd (2005) versus Poland WCQ 2005

I have been very lucky and obtained my "up grade" with a match worn Daniel Gabbidon shirt from the World Cup Qualifying game against Poland in the Legia Stadium, Warsaw on 7th September 2005. This was a unique tribute kit to Welsh footballing legend John Charles, made by Kappa and used as the 3rd choice shirt for the 2005/06 season. The match finished in a 1-0 defeat for Wales.

The shirt was only even worn on two occasions by the senior team. The first time in a friendly versus Slovenia, appropriately at Swansea City's Liberty Stadium -Swansea being Charles' home town- and in this World Cup Qualifier in Poland. As a players shirt it has the differences to replica's of the same style, correct material mix, wash label and Gara tag plus the World Cup Qualifying Germany 2006 World Cup sleeve badge to the right arm. The structural authenticity is correct but the provenance is what seperates the shirt as a genuine Gabbidon shirt coming to me from a football official.

The design and colours came from all the teams John Charles played with distinction for during his illustrious career. The stripes and black of Juventus, the white of Leeds United and of course the red of his beloved country of birth, Wales. The predominance of black being chosen as a mark of respect, after his death in February 2004.
