Away (1980-83) versus Yugoslavia European Championship Qualifier 1982

This is John Mahoney's Adidas yellow & green away shirt from the European Championship Qualifier against Yugolslavia, the amazing 4-4 draw in Titograd on 15th December 1982. Mahoney was a fine midfield player, who made his debut for Wales against England in 1967 and drew a close to his international career 16 years later against the same opponents.  Another of the Gold Cap holder -to mark 50 appearances at senior level- with this game against Yugoslavia actually being his 50th and penultimate appearance for his country. The shirt was purchased by myself from well known Welsh football memorabilia collector Wayne John, with the information that it was Mahoney's shirt from the game against Yugoslavia. Initially my own research cast a little doubt over the game it was worn in and therefore the player who wore it, so i want to apologise to Wayne for questioning his knowledge, word and the shirt's provenance!!

The problem is that for the seven years Wales used Adidas as their kit manufacturer they used five different styles of number font and unbelievabily in four different colours of number! Due to the lack of photograph's from this era it has proved to be very difficult to find evidence of the different font styles used in different games. But eventually research confirmed that the solid black font style numbers with the incorporated Adidas trefoil logo were first used on the away shirt for this game in Yugolslavia, also see the Neville Southall goalkeepers shirt from the same game, another factor in confirming this shirt as Mahoney's and enabling me to identify the game it would have been worn in. Adidas like Admiral removed the tagline scroll "Gorau Chwarae Cyd Chwarae" from underneath the national crest. The shirt has all the characteristics that confirm it as a players shirt, the embroidered national crest and Adidas trefoil logo- replica's were vinyl heat pressed transfers-, the correct collar tag and of course the felt solid Adidas font numbers to the reverse which were not available commercially to buy.
