Home (1972) versus England 1972

A rare "one off" home match worn shirt of full back, Rod Thomas in the three nil Home International Championship defeat to England on 20th May 1972. The reason the shirt is a rare "one off" is due to it being made by Bukta, not Umbro who had been the long term kit suppliers to the FAW and would remain so for a further two and half years.

A local Cardiff sports shop agreed to sponsor the Welsh kit for this one game, and provided a Bukta strip for the occasion. Wales were not going to use Bukta as kit suppliers until 1975 and then, strangely only for one calander year. It was good to see that the tradition of match detail embroidery above the national Crest continued for this game even with it being a "one off". The shirt was actually made from a material called Bri-Nylon and not manufactured using the normal cotton, and could not have been the most comfortable shirt for the players to wear in the Cardiff sunshine! Maybe thats the excuse for the heavy defeat!! ;-) Because at this time Welsh players were still only issued with one shirt per game, there will be only 14 outfield shirts in existence, therefore making this and the Malcolm Page no.15 shirt in my collection genuinely rare styles of shirt.
