JOHN HARTSON

Home (2004-05) versus Northern Ireland WCQ 2004

This superb match worn John Hartson shirt is from the World Cup Qualifying 2-2 draw with Northern Ireland in the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff on 8th September 2004. An exciting game, best remembered for the 3 sending off's including Robbie Savage and David Healey, and Wales coming back from 2-0 down, but ultimately not a great result for either nation. John scored Wales first goal in the game.

The shirt was obtained from the personal collection of ex-Northern Ireland centre half Mark Bomber Williams, who is a personal friend of John Hartson and exchanged shirts with him at the end of the game. A large proportion of Mark Williams Collection can be viewed on Linden's excellent northernirelandmatchworn.com, and was the person who obtained this shirt from Mark for me. In return John was happy enough to let me have Mark's spare to pass onto Linden. You will notice that the shirt does not have the usual World Cup Germany 2006 Qualifying sleeve badge on the right sleeve, but if you look at pictures from the game you'll see that John's shirt did not have one on. This wasn't an error by the Welsh kit man, but John has actually confessed, he disliked them and used to peel them off in the dressing room before the game. Something also confirmed by the Welsh kit man who said he commonly found the badges stuck on the inside of the toilet door!! A great shirt with unbelievable history and provenance.
