WALES (Home 1967-72) v SCOTLAND Home International Championship 1971-72

This all red Umbro home long sleeve Wales shirt was worn by Leighton Phillips in the Home International Championship match against Scotland at Hampden Park Stadium on 24th May 1972. The shirt is unwashed, with some Hampden mud still visible on the sleeves, and came from the personal collection of Leeds United legend Peter Lorimer, with whom Phillips exchanged shirts at the end of match. A match Scotland won, with Lorimer scoring the games only goal. Unusually Phillips, normally a centre half, wore the number 11 shirt, because midfielders, the two Terry's, Hennessey and Yorath wore numbers 4 and 6 respectively.

It is a Umbro Aztec manufactured shirt, made using the Umbro Tangeru shrink resistant cotton, the plain red style used by the Welsh team between 1967 and 1974. This particular shirt has the larger Heraldic Crest used for the penultimate time in this fixture before switching to the smaller version on these shirts against England later in the same year. This smaller size Crest was then used on the same style shirt until 1974.  The Umbro "Choice of Champions" printed logo appears on the bottom right hand side and the yellow cloth, stitched applied numbers to the reverse. I purchased this shirt from Ben the curator of the excellent Leeds United matchworn web site (see links tab above) in 2010, he having obtain the majority of Lorimer's shirt collection a few years previously. It therefore comes with a signed letter from Peter Lorimer confirming the shirts provenance.
