DANIEL GABBIDON

Home (2002-04) versus Russia Euro Championship Play Off 1st Leg 2003

This is Daniel Gabbidon's spare short sleeve shirt -he wore his normal for that time, preference of long sleeve in the game- from the first leg of the Euro 2004 Championships Qualifier Play Off 0-0 draw against Russia in Moscow on 15th November 2003. The shirt is unique because it carries the match detail gold embroidery, in Welsh, RWSIA V CYMRU, GEM AIL-GYFLEEWRO 2004, STADIWM LOKOMOTIV MOSCOW, 15 TACHWEDD 2003, to the shirts right breast. It was only the second time since 1974 that Welsh shirts carried match details -see John Robinson's v Armenia 2001 for an example of the first one- and was repeated for the 2nd Leg 4 days later -see Jason Koumas shirt- The shirt is also signed by Daniel to the front.

The goal less draw was an encouraging result away in the Russian capital, but the second leg had the "nearly men" tag attached back to the Welsh national football team when they suffered another heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in the Millennium Stadium, and subsequently going out on the same aggregate score at the Play Off Stage. The photo is of Gabbidon before the second leg game and the match detail -obviously slightly different date and venue- embroidery to the shirts right breast, and is copyright of Action Images.
