JOHN CORNFORTH

Away (1993-94) versus Moldova 1994

John Cornforth's bench worn long sleeve shirt for the away Euro Championship Qualifier against Moldova on 10th October 1994. John was an unused substitute for the game.

The shirt was historically typical of Wales away shirt designs, it was actually only worn by the first team twice! The first time away against the newly formed R.C.S (Republic of Czech and Slovakia), although the U21's had worn it first versus Belgium, and then its last outing in the shock 3-2 defeat to Moldova. "Rolled over in Moldova" were the headlines that greeted the Welsh team on their return from the former Soviet State.

Like Umbro shirts of the time, the shirt actually carries many differences to replica's. As was also normal with Umbro designs of the time, the players shirts carry a different neck collar tag code number, which appeared on the second white tag in the collar. Although the replica's also carried the shield surrounding the embroidered national crest there is also one other subtle difference with this that confirms it as a players shirt. The long sleeve versions, not available to buy as a commercial replica, carried "over long" sleeves, with white with red and green trim cuffs, which were not present on the short sleeve versions.

I apologise for the poor quality pictures, better images will be added soon.
