RUDI VOLLER

GERMANY v WALES European Championship Qualifier 1991

This is German goalscoring hero Rudi Voller's match worn shirt from the European Championship Qualifying international against Wales in Nuremburg on the 16th October 1991. After their famous 1-0 win four months before, Wales, hopes of a repeat and so qualifying, were brought crashing down on a nightmare night in Germany when they were on the end of a 4-1 hammering. This was Kevin Ratcliffe's 58th and penultimate cap. Voller scored in the game after an amazing error by Gavin Maguire. In attempting to chip a back pass to Welsh keeper Neville Southall, Maguire actually turn provider as his pass across his own penalty box became a cross for a very surprised Voller and to the total dismay of his Welsh team mates. Voller gratefully accepted his gift glancing in the header, the second goal of a three goals in an 11 minute spell just before half time, ending the game as a contest and with it any hopes Wales had of qualifying. At the final whistle a shattered Ratcliffe hurriedly headed for the tunnel but was called back by Voller and shirts were exchanged on the pitch. Kevin through his disappointment wasn't aware it was Voller with whom he had swapped but research and the evidence of video footaged confirmed it as Rudi Voller's shirt.

Voller, went on to have a 12 year career for his country, capped 90 times in which he scored 47 goals. He became a World Cup winner in 1990 having been a previous tournament runner-up in 1986 as well as a European Championship losing finalist at Euro'92.
