TERRY YORATH

Home (1980-84) versus USSR 1981

This shirt originated from the personal collection of Welsh goalkeeping legend Dai Davies, and purchased as a match worn Terry Yorath shirt. Davies' collection came up for auction at Bonhams in Chester in November 2008 and this Yorath shirt was part of that sale and where i purchased it from. Subsequent research and discussion with Ceri Stennett the Welsh FA Historian, shows that Yorath wore the no.5 in two games for Wales in this Adidas style of shirt and was infact issued the squad number 5 for the Home International Championship of 1981. Yorath was actually injured for that tournament but Wales kept the same numbers for the World Cup Qualifier against the USSR on the 30th May 1981 and Yorath played, what turned out to be his last game of his 59 Cap International career in the Racecourse Ground goal less stalemate.

It is believed that Yorath, as was quite a common practice amongst international team and club mates, gave the shirt to, or swapped the shirt with Davies after this match. The action picture shows Yorath playing against USSR in the 1981 match and is copyright of Getty Images.
