MEL CHARLES

Mel Charles' Wales home match worn shirt from the Home International (British) Championship game against Northern Ireland, played in Windsor Park, Belfast on 10th April 1957. The game first as a 0-0 draw.

The younger brother of the legendary John Charles and father of another former Welsh international, Jeremy, Mel, like his brother could play as either a central defender or centre forward. Actually his preferred position was as a right half. Capped 31 times by Wales over an 8 year period between 1955 and 1963, scoring 6 goals, 4 of which came in Wales 4-0 win against N.Ireland in April 1962. An integeral member of Wales successful 1958 World Cup squad which reached the Quarter Finals in Sweden and only British player to be voted into the team of the tournament.
