Home versus Northern Ireland B International 1999

A very strange home shirt design, but why was it introduced by Lotto at all? The style was never used by the senior team, and when this style was used there already was a home design in use, with a further 18 month lifespan. It is actually the reverse style of the yellow away shirt used by the senior team against Denmark in 1998- see the Mark Pembridge no.16 yellow shirt- and only used on two occasions, once by the B Team and once by the Youth team.

This particular shirt was worn by David Hughes as a substitute in the B International friendly match against Northern Ireland on 9th February 1999 at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground. Wales won the match 1-0. Centre half Hughes came on as a 48th minute substitute and swapped shirts with N.Ireland substitute Jeff Whitley, from whose collection the shirt originated. A very rare shirt, only being worn twice and never by the first team, and this differs from the style worn by the U18 Youth team because this shirt has numbers added to the front, something the Youth shirts did not have.

I had the pleasure of working with Dave Hughes, whilst he was a Shrewsbury Town player, before his big money move to Cardiff City. Sadly injury cut his playing career short, but i expect to see him back in the game sometime in the future in a coaching capacity.
