Away yellow (2006-08) versus Czech Republic European Championship Qualifier 2006

This is another rare Wales away shirt. Kappa released this yellow with green deep v-neck collar and green cuffs as a retro version of the late 1950's (including it being worn in 1958 World Cup) style. First worn in the two end of season tour games v Trinidad & Tobago and the Basque Country XI in May 2006. Kicking off the European Championship 2008 Qualifying campaign away in the Czech Republic was the only time it was used, with the subtle differences, from the shirts worn in the two friendlies. It was a very disappointing start to the Qualifying campaign, when Wales conceded a late 88th minute goal resulting in a 2-1 defeat. Things most definitely did not get better from there.

This shirt was the long sleeve spare of Ryan Giggs and it carries all the specifications -including the subtle differences mentioned above- that confirm it as a players shirt. A shirt design and colour that courted very mixed opinions amongst the supporters and that the Senior team only the wore on this one occasion, hence its rarity. It has the usual match detail print under the National Crest as seen on players shirts, "Y WERINIAETH SIEC 02-09-2009 GEM 540", with the Euro 2008 PVC Vinyl sleeve badge applied to the right arm, plus and most importantly a major structural difference, the lack of the Cymru 1876 embriodery below the back of collar.  This was a directive from UEFA who said that Wales were not allowed to play in Euro 2008 Qualifiers with that embroidery on the shirts -it also therefore applied to the home shirts- making it a completely different structure/material mix from that of the non-qualifying shirts (worn in the two friendlies) and of course replica's. This style was never available to buy commercially and when you consider that it was only worn this once and that Welsh players get only two shirts per game, one long sleeve and one short sleeve, to get Ryan Giggs spare, of a truly rare, almost impossible to find players shirt, is great news for me, especially as a Giggs collector!! The shirt was obtained directly from a football official from whom i purchased it, so provenance is never in doubt.
