Goalkeepers Light Blue v England 1976

Dai Davies goalkeepers shirt match worn in the one nil defeat to England, during the Home International Championship of 1976. The Football Association of Wales celebrated their Centenary year in 1976, and this was the second meeting of the year against the old rivals from across the border, and finished just as the March Centenary match had, with victory for England. For their Centenary year Wales also changed their kit supplier, from Butka to Admiral. This goalkeepers shirt is unusual because it is light blue, instead of the normal gold/yellow colour that at the time was used as an international goalkeepers shirt colour. This shirt of course is made from cotton, has the fully embroidered national Crest, to the front centre, and the Admiral logo's on the lovely wing collars, all stitched applied as is the cloth number one to the reverse. I'm not even sure Admiral made replica goalkeeper shirts, but i would be very suprised if they ever did in this colour.

Wales first goalkeeper to reach the 50 appearances land mark for his country, Davies went onto finish with a 52 cap haul. The shirt comes from the Mullocks Specialist Auctioneers Sporting Memorabilia Auction in November 2008, where i won it. The previous vendor had been given the shirt by Dai Davies, when they were next door neighbours! A great addition to my collection, helping me take a step closer to my "completest" aim of having at least one shirt of each of the players to represent Wales 50 times or more, all the gold cap holders!

The action picture shows Dai in the more usual yellow Admiral goalkeepers shirt, sometime during 1977 or 78, and is copyright of Action Images.
